WAITING, NOT WASTING

An update on Legacy Christian Academy

When all of the educational institutions were shut down last March, no one knew what to expect. Would it be a few weeks, maybe a month?

Months turned into a year of all schools being closed in Uganda. And for a school like Legacy Christian Academy here in Kubamitwe, East Africa, that literally means no school… no homework assignments or books to read. No library. No zoom calls with teachers. No internet. For the Kindergarten through P7 students in our community, it has literally meant a year off of school… And yet, while this was a season of waiting, it was not a season of wasting.

When time began to reveal that it would be a while before school was formally opened again, instead of quitting, despairing, or sitting around waiting, Legacy went back to work.

Solomon Kavuma, Legacy’s Headmaster, gathered his team and started training. Every week all of his teachers met together. They role-played. They gave feedback. They encouraged and critiqued. They planned and prepared.

Eventually our P7 students and their teachers began meeting for class in preparation for an important exam that just occurred last week! Our teachers met with their students 8 hours a day, testing, teaching, and testing again. Our P7 students celebrating after their exam!

And the other teachers? They met weekly for training; they lesson planned and thought through goals and specific action items. They prepared the fields, and prayed for years of fruitful harvest.

We are rejoicing in the good news that Legacy has resumed school. Please join us in praying for all the labors of our teachers to be turned into something beautiful in the hearts and minds of our Legacy students in the days to come!

STRIVING FORWARD

An update on Shepherds Training Center

Shepherds Training Center opened in February 2019 to host its first class of students. They completed their first year in November 2019, and the men returned back to their villages and home churches to continue to preach the gospel, shepherd the flock of God, and complete a year of at-home practicum and homework assignments. In February 2020 the second class of men arrived and were 6 weeks into their first term when COVID-19 shut down all educational institutions in Uganda. The men were sent home to wait.

One year later, we rejoiced at the announcement that Uganda’s president had issued an order that opens schools and private tertiary institutions, which included Shepherds Training Center. The STC Staff celebrated... and then started running!

Syllabi were written; class schedules organized; dorm rooms cleaned; food stocked and prepared; and prayers prayed for a rich, thorough, intense term of learning.

STC FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

While things were slower during the closure, STC staff was still working. The process of institutional accreditation with Uganda’s National Council of Higher Education has progressed. And much work has been done drawing plans and beginning building work on future STC student family housing. It’s an exciting time, and even more exciting now that our STC have returned!

Pastor Edward Kintu graduated with his MDiv from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and moved back to Kubamitwe in October to serve as a professor at Shepherds Training Center.

Shannon first met Edward in 2006 as a 25 year old lay reader in the Anglican Church. Click the link at the bottom of the email to read Edward's story!
